Slow Playing Aces, Too Cute For a $1 Sit-N-Go…

In another single table $1 Sit-N-Go, its 5 handed and I find pocket aces in late position. With a fold in front, I decide to limp in, rather then make my standard raise. On the flop I start to regret it, as there’s both flush and straight potential out there, and my opponents love to chase a flush. I lead out with a pot size bet and get called.

It felt like he was drawing here, so when the 3rd flush card falls on the turn, I regret being cute, but with so much at stake and with the ace of diamonds in my hand in case he has made his hand I push all-in. Villain takes a long time to think about it and eventually calls with 98, 2nd pair and a gut shot, with not one diamond.

To my horror he makes it on the river and I’m out in 5th. If he turned over a flush, nice hand, wish I’d raised, etc… but to chase that, with not one diamond… was I being too cute here, or just one of those things we don’t like to talk about?

This was a bit of a cooler, so instead of diving straight into another couple of sit-n-go’s I’m giving myself a quick break to re-compose myself before I dig in again. I’m aiming to get 10 have these completed before 4am, two tabling, but I’ll be happy with 8 if I can finish in profit. I’m getting awfully worried by the amount of 5th place finishes I’ve had since yesterday, but can’t see much wrong with how I’ve been playing.

If tonight finishes on a similar note to last night, I think, if only for psychological reasons, I’m going to have to slow down a bit, just to steady myself and will probably try and stick with playing the games one at a time for awhile, though that will be hard, now that I’ve gotten used to doing two at a time.

4 Times!

I’ve just been railed again, this time in 4th, by yet another opponent who makes trips to bust me. This is now the 4th consecutive game where I have lost a crucial pot to an opponent who made trips, 3 of those cost me my tournament seat… I am not fucking happy.

This 4th time I was short stacked with less then ten big blinds and find AA. Now I knew this was risky on the onset, but took and chance, its not so much loosing the pot that pisses me off, its the same thing happening 4 times in a row!

Anyways I’m short stacked and if I win the pot outright before the flop I will barley have ten big blinds, it would be better then nothing but it wouldn’t be good enough, so I decided to try and sell a call. I did this by making a standard 4xBB raise to 600, leaving me with a little over 800 and offering the best odds I could for someone to call without inviting too many people in on the action.

I get one caller which is exactly what I wanted, but I get a terrible flop, TxT, I have no choice, I’m pot committed and go all-in, hoping for a fold, but instead I’m greeted by JT who flopped trips, I miss my outs on 4th and 5th and are on the rail again.

Thats Better

Just left a 1c/2c NL cash game on Poker Stars with a nice little profit, to reduce my earlier losses. Made $1.54 in only 24 hands, I could have sat a little longer, but I still don’t feel comfortable in the cash games, I’d hate to see my profits disappear so only played for a few orbits.

Think I played well and took down a couple of nice pots. A couple of hands before the blinds reached me when I was going to leave I find pocket aces, and am excited about taking down another nice pot before I leave, I make a standard raise and everyone folds, ah well, a small win is better then a big loss 🙂

I’ve reduced my ring games net loss from when I was playing limit cash games to only -$1.85, which is nice. I’m looking forward to getting this in the black so my Sit-N-Go profits aren’t reduced to cover those early losses.

Crap Day

Well its been a crap day today, lost 3 games in a row, so calling it a do, although I’m planning on sitting in on a cash game later. The good news is that all 3 games where totally different and each gave me something to think about, and reminded me of some weaknesses.

The first game never gave me action for my strong hands which reminded me I need to bluff now and again, which is something I hardly ever do online, but do pretty well live. The 2nd game reminded me that if someone is calling you all the way to showdown, they sometimes do have a hand, even if the do make a habit of doing it with nothing.

Finally my last game showed a weakness in my game when I have a maniac on my table. My normal strategy is to be patient and to not tangle with them and then when the cards come stack them, if the cards don’t come though as they didn’t in this game I’m left short stacked and am under even more pressure not to make a move. In this instance Mr Lunatic raised virtually every pot regardless of what he held, I should have played back at him and re-raised with some speculative hands, rather then just let him dominate the table whilst I fold to his constant raising.

I don’t feel I have played well at all today, but not too badly either, in two games out of the three I was beaten by pocket aces and the other by a set. At least I picked up some much needed points and bumped into some situations to get me thinking.

Nice Cards :-)

Whilst waiting for a freeroll tournament to start, thought I’ll sit down at a cash game for a few hands and try and pick up a bit of profit to off-set my deficit and I ran into a bit of luck.

After a couple of hands, I found KK in the hole, and went in with a raise, and got one aggressive caller to re-raise me, I re-raised him back and found another king waiting for me on the flop – Lovely. The very next hand and I find AA and go in aggressive (a limit game), the same player sticks with me, no set from the flop this time but my pair did the job on its own and netted me a nice profit.

Think thats the first time I’ve ever found KK and then AA immediately afterwards.
